Single Mom on a Budget Does Disney
For many Disney enthusiasts, planning a trip to Walt Disney World raises the age-old question: is it better to stay on property or off? It’s important to consider various factors before making a decision, and your choice may ultimately depend on how you prefer to experience the magic. From my perspective as a single mom on a budget, the answer is clear: staying on property is the way to go. Here’s why.
Our Disney Journey Begins
A few years ago, my children and I embarked on our first magical adventure to Disney World, opting to stay at a Good Neighbor Hotel instead of an on-site property. We had a fantastic experience and decided to replicate this choice during our next visit to Walt Disney World.
With several trips to WDW under our belts, spanning across various seasons and accommodations—from Value Resorts to Deluxe Resorts—we felt it was time to try an off-property hotel. Traveling with another family of six led us to seek more budget-friendly options, reminiscent of our wonderful last Disney World stay.
The Off-Property Experience
During our off-property visit, the Disney Dining Plan hadn’t been reintroduced, prompting us to explore alternative dining options. We arrived in Orlando by plane and chose not to rent a car, which turned out to be a significant oversight. The hotel shuttle service was limited, operating only during certain hours and never late enough to catch the nighttime entertainment like Fireworks. This left us reliant on Uber or waiting for our companions who had a vehicle.
Despite these inconveniences, the hotel itself was lovely, boasting the best pool we’d experienced at any hotel. For a non-Disney trip, it would have been a great choice.
Why We Prefer the Disney Bubble
We’ve always been fans of the “Disney Bubble” lifestyle, cherishing the convenience and ambiance of staying on property at a Disney Resort Hotel. There’s a unique atmosphere at Walt Disney World hotels that brings unparalleled joy to our family.
However, Disney vacations can be expensive. Staying off property can present a more affordable alternative, with numerous high-quality hotels offering excellent amenities at competitive prices. If you have your own transportation and no intention of using the Disney Dining Plan, these off-site options are worth considering. Orlando also boasts fantastic rental homes, but they can’t be bundled with theme park tickets or allow for partial payments.
On Property Perks
If you’re flying in, utilizing a shuttle or Uber to reach Walt Disney World, without plans to rent a car, and intending to use a dining plan, staying on property is your best bet. Affordable hotels are available right on Disney property, ensuring you’re immersed in the magic 24/7.
For families with young children who might need midday naps or breaks from the summer heat, staying on property offers easy access to your room for a quick rest or pool break.
Final Thoughts
In conclusion, whether to stay on or off property at Walt Disney World depends on how you wish to experience Disney. If you’re seeking an “all inclusive” feel where it’s all Disney, all the time, on property is the best choice! I’m grateful we tried staying off property, but for my family, there’s no question—on property is the only way to go when staying at Walt Disney World.
